Busó Carnival in Mohács, Hungary photography by Rudolf Abraham
Hungary travel and documentary photography by Rudolf Abraham – images from the Busó carnival in Mohács. The Busó carnival or Busójárás is a traditional Shrovetide carnival in the southern Hungarian town of Mohács, in which the busós - local men wearing frightening-looking wooden masks and sheepskins, with cowbells tied around their waists - cross the Danube in boats and parade through the town, banishing winter and ushering in the beginning of spring. Today the traditional procession is accompanied by folkdance performances and mask carving workshops, as well as a children's carnival. The Busó carnival, the origins of which lies with the Croatian Šokci population of the town, is inscribed on the Unesco list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. © Rudolf Abraham
