Cloister of the Dome Cathedral, Riga, Latvia. European Capital of Culture 2014. An enormous red brick building, the Dome Cathedral (Rigas Doms) is one of the largest medieval cathedrals on the Baltic. The foundations were laid in 1211, though it has undergone many changes over the centuries, and now combines features from Romanesque, early Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture. Despite the English translation of its name, it actually has a spire not a dome. © Rudolf Abraham
