The Europakreuz, a 5m-high metal cross on Alberfeldkogel, on Feuerkogel, above Traunsee, Salzkammergut, Austria. The large metal cross on Alberfeldkogel was installed in 2006 and is constructed of metal cubes, one for each EU member state at that time, each of which contains a piece of rock from that respective country which tells a piece of its history (for example the Austrian stone comes from a well-known quarry in Burgenland; the stone from Latvia comes from the base of the former Lenin monument in Riga, which was dismantled in August 1991; the stone from Germany is a fragment of the Berlin Wall). The metal cubes are open sided symbolising the principles of free movement within the EU © Rudolf Abraham
