< Lake Skadar National Park Montenegro
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, sprawling across the border between Montenegro and Albania (about half of the lake lies in each country) and covering an area of between 370km2 in summer and over 500km2 in winter. One of Montenegro's five national parks, it is also a RAMSAR site (Wetland of International Importance) and an IBA (International Birding Area), and its biodiversity is incredibly rich – over 270 species of bird have been recorded here, including the Dalmatian pelican which nests on the lake, and huge numbers of pygmy cormorant, and it is hugely important as a stopover on winter migration routes, with around 200,000 or more birds wintering here.
